We were overcome by its biblical façade coupled with the mythical labyrinth only discoverable through its unparalleled accessibility. As we journeyed through the Sassi di Matera, as the tufo carved caves are called, we touched the powdery arches, smelled the dampness as we descended, and saw the genius of a city being reborn, again.
