Fall turns vineyards and forests gold and fills markets with the flavors of harvest. Winter sends us south (when we are not skiing), toward Mediterranean light, historic towns, and quieter roads.
For North American travelers, this seasonal approach can also open up a different kind of European trip. The Netherlands: Driving the Dutch Bulb Route Beyond Amsterdam
Best for: March through May | Flowers, gardens, villages
Tulip season is one of those European experiences worth planning around, and we love road tripping in the Netherlands.
From Amsterdam, head toward Lisse and the Dutch bulb-growing region, where fields erupt in stripes of color around Keukenhof. Continue toward Leiden or Haarlem, taking time to leave the main road. Canals, farmhouses, small villages, and flower fields appear around nearly every bend. Delft is one of our favorite places on earth to have a spring picnic by the canal.
The Netherlands is compact and full of delightful food and markets. Build in time to map yourself to market day, wander a village full of thatched roofs, or pull over when a field of windmills reveals itself to you.
For North Americans, it is an easy introduction to European driving: a major city, spectacular countryside, and short distances that still offer plenty of variety.
Slovenia: Alpine Valleys & Soča River Scenic Drive
Best for: April through June | Mountains, lakes, villages
We have driven enough of Slovenia to know that it rarely takes long for the landscape to become spectacular.
From Ljubljana, head toward the Soča Valley and Kobarid, where the emerald river runs beneath the Julian Alps. Continue toward Lake Bohinj, with waterfalls, forests, meadows, and snow still lingering on the higher peaks.
Spring is particularly beautiful here. The countryside is intensely green, water levels are high, and the mountains provide a dramatic backdrop.
It is also a wonderful country for a road trip because you can see diverse landscapes and cities without spending your vacation covering enormous distances. A short drive can take you from an alpine lake to a river gorge to a mountain village, or, if you are lucky, to Piran or Moon Bay, along the coast, for a truly unique coastal experience.
Northern Portugal: Driving the Douro River Valley Route
Best for: April through June | Wine, food, river valleys
Leave Porto and follow the Douro inland. The city quickly gives way to vineyards, stone villages, and hillsides carved into terraces above the river.
Spring brings fresh green growth and comfortable temperatures for exploring the countryside. Give yourself time to stop at viewpoints, visit a quinta, and linger over lunch.
The road between destinations is part of the experience here. Having a car allows you to turn a journey from Porto into a few days of discovery following hand-painted vineyard signs down a cobbled path.
Northern Spain & Basque Country: Coastal & Mountain Driving Routes
Best for: April through June | Food, wine, coastline, mountains
Begin in Bilbao and travel toward San Sebastián before turning inland toward Rioja and the Picos de Europa.
This route packs an extraordinary amount of landscape into one journey: Atlantic coastline, green hills, vineyards, mountain valleys, sophisticated cities, and small villages.
Spring is ideal in northern Spain, when the countryside is lush and temperatures are comfortable for exploring on foot. The museums and food scene attract global aficionados, so early spring guarantees you will beat the crowds. The road constantly changes character, which is exactly what we look for in a European drive.
Summer European Road Trips: Alpine Passes & Fjord Highways
Norway Fjord Road Trip: Fjords, Ferries & Mountain Highways
Best for: June through September | Fjords, waterfalls, mountains
Norway is a road trip where the scenery regularly makes you reconsider your schedule.
From Oslo, travel toward Lillehammer and west into the fjord country around Geiranger, then continue toward Ålesund. Mountain roads, waterfalls, ferries, and enormous stretches of water provide a constantly changing backdrop.
Norwegian distances can be deceptive. A short stretch on the map may take much longer once you account for mountain roads, ferry crossings, and the inevitable stops.
That is part of the magic. In summer, long daylight hours give you time to take the detour, wait for the clouds to clear, or stop simply because the view is too good to pass.
Sweden Road Trip: Lakes, Deep Forests & Island Exploration
Best for: June through August | Lakes, forests, villages
From Stockholm, head toward Lake Mälaren and continue into Dalarna and the Lake Siljan region.
Sweden offers a quieter Scandinavian road trip: deep forests, shimmering lakes, red cottages, small towns, and roads that seem designed for unhurried exploration.
The long summer evenings make it especially rewarding. There is time for a swim, a bakery stop, a walk beside the lake, and still enough daylight for another stretch of road. We love the Swedish Archipelago from both Stockholm and Gothenburg, and many of the islands are car-free, giving you the chance to stretch your legs for a bit while exploring.
Austrian Alps Driving Route: High Alpine Passes & Mountain Villages
Best for: June through September | Mountain passes, lakes, hiking
Start in Salzburg and head toward the Grossglockner High Alpine Road before continuing toward Zell am See and Innsbruck.
As you climb, forests and alpine meadows carpet the waterfalls, rocky peaks, and high mountain viewpoints. The drive itself is the attraction. Descending into Innsbruck for a meal after a full day exploring is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The energy is palpable with patrons talking about their day’s adventure!
Austria also demonstrates one of the pleasures of European road travel we have experienced again and again: borders don’t have to interrupt the journey. Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Slovenia are all within reach, allowing a road trip to evolve naturally as the landscape changes.
Croatia Road Trip: Istrian Hill Towns to the Adriatic Coast
Best for: June through September | Coast, historic towns, food
Begin in Pula, where Roman ruins meet the Adriatic, then follow the coast toward Rovinj before turning inland through Istria’s vineyards, olive groves, and hill towns. Motovun and Grožnjan make memorable stops, with Opatija and Rijeka offering a final change of scenery along the northern Adriatic.
Istria is especially rewarding by car because the region’s character changes within a few miles. Follow the coast for a while, turn inland toward a hilltop village, stop for truffles or local wine, then return to the sea before the day is over.
Autumn Road Trips in Europe: Harvest Season & Golden Valleys
Tuscany Autumn Drive: Vineyards, Harvests & Tuscan Hill Towns
Best for: September through November | Wine, food, countryside
We have driven throughout Italy, and Tuscany remains one of those landscapes that stays with you.
In fall, the hills around Chianti and Val d’Orcia turn gold and russet. Vineyards are busy with harvest, olive groves begin their seasonal work, and the cooler temperatures make long days behind the wheel much more comfortable.
Drive between Florence, Chianti, Siena, and the Val d’Orcia, but leave room for the roads in between. A detour to the coast or Michelangelo’s marble mountains offers a completely fresh perspective.
Bavarian Alps Autumn Road Trip: Castles & Golden Forests
Best for: September through October | Mountains, forests, castles
From Munich, head south toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Bavarian Alps, then continue toward Füssen.
In autumn, the forests turn gold and copper against the mountains, while higher peaks may already carry their first snow. Lakes, castles, villages, and alpine roads make this an unusually varied drive.
It is also easy to continue across the border into Austria, making Bavaria an ideal starting point for a broader European journey.
Alsace Wine Route: Driving France’s Historic Autumn Villages
Best for: September through October | Wine, villages, harvest
From Strasbourg, head south through Colmar, Ribeauvillé, and the vineyards along the Vosges.
The villages are beautiful, but the drive between them is what makes Alsace special. Vineyards seem to reflect the light of sunset itself, harvest is underway, and half-timbered towns appear between the hills.
For travelers flying from North America, Alsace also makes a convenient base for exploring neighboring Germany and Switzerland by car. Best of all, slipping across the border into Germany’s Black Forest or Switzerland requires zero extra paperwork, border permissions, or surprise rental fees, giving you total freedom to follow the fall foliage wherever it leads.
Denmark Autumn Drive: Coastal Forests & Quiet Island Routes

Start in Copenhagen and explore Zealand before continuing toward Møn and its dramatic cliffs, then onward to Odense and Funen.
Autumn gives Denmark a wonderful sense of calm. Forests turn, coastal air sharpens, and short driving distances leave plenty of time for exploring.

Winter European Road Trips: Southern Sun & Crowd-Free Routes
Sicily Winter Road Trip: Coastal Views, History & Quiet Towns

We have driven Sicily from Taormina toward San Vito Lo Capo, and winter offers an entirely different experience.
With summer crowds gone, the focus naturally shifts toward food, archaeology, markets, villages, and the Baroque towns of southeastern Sicily.
A route from Palermo through Cefalù, Mount Etna, Noto, and Syracuse brings together dramatically varied landscapes and plenty of reasons to stop for lunch.
Southern & Central Spain Winter Road Trip: Sunshine, Olive Groves & Tapas
Best for: November through March | Historic cities, countryside, food, sunshine
Begin in Madrid and head south through the open landscapes of Castilla-La Mancha before continuing toward Córdoba, Seville, and the southern coast. Along the way, the scenery shifts from broad plains and hilltop towns to olive groves, whitewashed villages, and warmer Mediterranean landscapes.
Winter is an especially appealing time to drive Spain. Days are often mild, the roads feel less pressured than during the summer months, and there is time to linger over tapas as the sun sets, wander a historic center, or take a spontaneous detour without worrying about the heat.
For North American travelers looking for a European road trip with sunshine, culture, and plenty of variety, this route makes winter feel remarkably far away.
Southern France Winter Drive: Medieval Villages & Mediterranean Light
Best for: November through March | Markets, history, vineyards, coast
Start around Montpellier and head toward Carcassonne before looping back toward Narbonne and the Mediterranean.
The route moves through vineyards, medieval towns, open countryside, and coastal landscapes. Winter is particularly suited to this kind of journey: antique markets, long picnics, tranquil historic centers and cathedrals, and the wide-open landscapes of the Camargue all invite a slower pace.

After more than 40,000 miles on European roads, we have learned that there is no single best season for a road trip.
Spring has warm crepes and emerald hills. Summer opens the Alpine passes for cool mornings and brings seemingly endless Scandinavian daylight. Fall turns vineyards, forests and olives into gold. Winter sends us toward Mediterranean sunshine.
That is the freedom we love about driving Europe. The continent is so much more than a single destination with a single ideal travel season. It is a collection of regions, each with its own rhythm.
